Flying Xmas for musical Palmy

A good relaxing and useful Xmas time was spent down in Palmy visiting musical friends who seem to move almost as often as me! This year I flew down and this was a really nice change. I would have had an awesome close view of the turquoise crater lake of Mt Ruapehu on the way south, if it wasn't for the condensated window of the old Q300 plane. I don't like Q300's. But the flight back yesterday on a noisy ATR72 was much better and had a nice intelligent kiwi chatting with me (so rare I find). Palmy airport is lovely and small. I even got to be checked in by a real person again! So much quicker and less fuss.

Xmas was hot and sunny and I borrowed a car and escaped to beach/sun club on 2 occasions. The latter being very successful as they had a lovely large fresh water pool to cool down in. Great bunch of club members met too.

I didn't quite manage my ~30 Unique Captures that I still need in Ingress. But we wandered around the city square and enjoyed introducing R to Japanese restaurant food and the walking game. A good few days. Now back in AKL for a bit of house sitting enroute to more up north after new year. All the best.

Jethro Tull gig in Auckland

Good gig although I wanted to dance around but couldn't. I love the Civic theatre, just awesome venue, great sound, no need for earplugs. Really liked the band he has. The guitarist is a young german guy who obviously spent his childhood learning guitar in his bedroom :) Yeah I'd take him home :) Having seen Martin Barre only a few months ago, the similarities were clear. And another honourable mention to the vocal support guy called Ryan. A real theatrical mover. Made it fun with more to watch. I enjoyed the gig more than I expected, altho Ian's voice was a distraction also as expected.

The audience must have come from far and wide. Who were they all? one couple had driven up from Napier. I had no idea Tull were still so popular. But it goes to show how many Brits there are in NZ. Interval music included "21st Century Schizoid Man" and Tim Buckley's "How do we hang on to a dream", which i couldn't help singing :)

So that was the Ingress Darsana Anomaly in Auckland*

Sadly it was good weather for toads in AKL this evening, and toads won 161 - 151 apparently. Oh well.

It was british weather, it was silly out there on the rainy streets! I joined Charlie alpha group and we covered an area near the Civic Theatre and Dullworth Building, both Q street. I missed the first measurement at 6pm up at Albert Park, but could see it from the bus. I abandoned around 8.30pm to the free red bus at the end due to cold fingers and the wrong clothes. Later bumped into Ray from the North Shore who was looking for the post event Blue pub. Together we found it and met up with lots of others. Eventually stf showed up at the pub just as i had to run for last bus, which i missed, so taxi back to car. cold wet night like Embra in August, ok not *that* cold! Weekend objectives met.

Would I bother with another anomaly event? Probably not, but it is good to meet up with lots of other players from all over the country.

With my new vehicle I have been up in the Far North and catching up with various ppl which has been nice. I've been doing a bit of Ingress and if you look on the http://www.ingress.com/intel you can see various blues fields in the Far North of NZ...they are all mine :) I must say that I appear to be the only active player up here at the moment tho! So no unique captures for me (which is really what I'm supposed to be after). But it's just an excuse for travelling really.

Back in NZ and am currently getting over my jetlag this week. I also have to find a new vehicle in which to continue my travels this season. Next on the calendar is a Yes gig on Monday in AKL.

Corncorde nose droops again
Cambridge UK
grendelis
Yesterday I was lucky enough to be present for this event. Shame my dad wasn't still around to tell more stories or meet up with John Dunlevy who was also at Filton at the same time.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cambridgeshire-29755140

It was amazingly quiet operation. I spent the rest of the day at Duxford finally checking the rest of their stuff out.

Amusingly a Haynes manual for Concorde was produced in 2010 - wonder if my dad knew about that. It gives a very nice potted history too of the early and development part of the story which is of most relevance and interest to my family.
